5I21
FPGA based PCI
RS-422/RS-485 I/O card
The MESA 5I21 is a programmable serial interface card for the
PCI bus. The 5I21 is designed for applications using RS-422 and RS-485
interfaces. The 5I21 can support up to 12 full duplex RS-422 or half
duplex RS-485 serial links with baud rates up to 10 M baud. The 5I21
uses a 400K gate Spartan3 FPGA and a bus mastering PCI bridge for high
performance. Since all serial logic is FPGA based, almost any
RS-422/RS485 protocol can be supported. The I/O connector is a 68 pin
high density type compatible with standard 100 ohm differential cables.
On card serial line termination includes idle line pullups and
pulldowns to guarantee a valid undriven input state. The 5I21 is
suitable for high speed motion control systems, Industrial I/O, Custom
real time distributed I/O, supporting legacy hardware, and almost any
high speed serial interface application that requires a flexible, high
performance, universal serial interface card.
4I39 FPGA based Anything I/O card with isolated RS-422 interface
The MESA 4I39 is a general purpose programmable I/O card for the
PC/104 bus. The 4I39 uses a 200K gate Xilinx FPGA for
all
logic, so it is truly an Anything I/O card. The 4I39 is designed
for RS-422 applications and provides 8 full duplex isolated RS-422
interfaces. Each interface is capable of 10 Mb per second
communication. The FPGA configuration is downloaded from the PC/104 bus
interface. In addition to the RS-422 I/O, 24 5V tolerant TTL I/O lines
are provided via a 50 pin connector with
I/O
module rack compatible pinout. The 4I39 is useful for motion control
systems, interfacing SSI type encoders, as a general purpose high speed
serial interface card, interfacing legacy hardware and devices with
proprietary protocols.

4I23 quad serial card
The 4I23 is a low cost, four channel serial port card on a stackable PC/104 bus card. The 4I23 is available in three versions: quad RS-232, quad RS-422, and a model with two RS-232 and two RS-422 channels. The 4I23 uses 16C550 type FIFO'ed UART's. These UART's have built-in 16 byte receive and transmit FIFO's. The 16 character FIFO's reduce interrupt overhead and allow higher data rates without losing characters. The receive FIFO's also increase the allowable interrupt latency. This is especially important when using programs like WINDOWS that disable interrupts for comparatively long periods of time. Unlike many serial cards, the 4I23 is implemented with the 16 bit bus connector so that each of the four serial ports on the 4I23 can use any of the 11 available AT bus interrupts. The 4I23 also has an shared interrupt capability. The four serial port interrupts can be logically or'ed to a common interrupt. The or'ed interrupts are individually maskable. The interrupt status of all four channels is readable at a single port location to allow quick response to the shared interrupt. All additional I/O necessary to implement the shared interrupt logic uses aliased addresses so that no extra I/O port locations are required. The RS-422 ports have one handshake-in and one handshake-out line. The RS-422 drivers can be software enabled and disabled for bus (RS-485) type applications. Jumper selectable RS-422 termination is provided on card. Serial port connectors are 10 pin headers that match 9 pin AT type serial port pinout when terminated with an IDC type 9 pin subminiature D connector. Serial port addresses are set with a PAL device. Eight different sets of port locations can be selected by option jumpers. The 4I23 requires only +5V for operation, as all RS-232 power is generated on card. All CMOS technology keeps power dissipation to a minimum.

The 4I32 is a high performance, four channel asynchronous serial port on a stackable PC/104 bus card. The 4I32 is available in three versions: quad RS-232, quad RS-422/485, and a model with two RS-232 and two RS-422/485 channels. The 4I32 is similar to the 4I23 but uses enhanced 16C550 compatible FIFO'ed UART's with many added features. The 4I32s UARTs have 128 byte receive and transmit FIFOs for lower interrupt overhead or to support higher baud rates. Baud rates up to 921.6K baud are supported with RS-422 or RS-485, and up to 230.4K baud with RS-232. The new UARTS also support automatic hardware or software flow control. Automatic direction control is provided for half duplex RS-485 type applications. Each of the four serial ports on the 4I32 can use any of the 11 available AT bus interrupts. The 4I32 also has an shared interrupt capability. The four serial port interrupts can be logically or'ed to a common interrupt. The or'ed interrupts are individually maskable. Jumper selectable RS-422 termination is provided on card. The 4I32 can be operated in full duplex or half duplex RS-485 mode. Both RS-232 and RS-422/485 interface chips have 15KV ESD protection to prevent static damage. Serial port connections are terminated in a 40 pin latching header. The pinout is designed so that a flat cable from the 4I32 can easily be terminated with four IDC DB9 type connectors giving the standard AT serial port pinout. Serial port addresses are set with a PAL device and can be customized if needed. Eight different sets of port locations can be selected by option jumpers. The 4I32 requires only +5V for operation, as all RS-232 power is generated on card.

4I29 NE2000 compatible Ethernet card
The 4I29 is a 16 bit Ethernet interface implemented on a stackable PC/104 bus card. The 4I29 supports 10BaseT (Twisted pair) and 10Base2 (Thin-BNC) Ethernet, plus has an AUI connector for connection to external transceivers. The 4I29 can also be supplied with an external panel mount BNC tranceiver for applications where access to the 4I29 card is restricted (the 4I29-E). The 4I29 can be compatible with the NE2000 or WD8013EBT depending on EEPROM set-up options. Most 4I29 options are settable via a provided setup utility, there are only two option jumpers (8/16 bit bus select and 10Base2 termination). Setup options are stored in an on card EEPROM, so that the setup utility need only be run when changing hardware settings. Programmable options include emulation mode (NE2000 or WD8013EBT), I/O address, boot PROM enable, boot PROM location, boot PROM size, interrupt select, and 10BaseT / 10Base2 / AUI selection. Selectable interrupts are IRQ2, IRQ3, IRQ4, IRQ5, IRQ10, IRQ11, and IRQ12. The 10Base2 DC-DC converter can be turned off to minimize power when idle, and is automatically disabled when the 4I29 is setup for twisted pair use. The all CMOS design of the 4I29 plus efficient DC-DC converter keeps operating power below 2 watts. Standard packet buffer is 16K bytes but a 64K byte buffer version is available if desired. A 32 pin dip socket allows installation of 28 or 32 pin boot PROMs from network vendors. The 4I29 is capable of writing to the boot PROM, allowing use of a 5V flash boot PROM if desired.
